Walsall maintained their climb up the table with an impressive home success over the league leaders, Luton Town, at Bescot.

It was a well-merited win inspired by another top-quality performance from player-manager Paul Merson.

Luton, defeated for the first time on Saturday, slumped to their first away reverse.

It was a Walsall win full of promise and when substitute Matt Fryatt scored the Saddlers second goal in the second period it was the first from one of their strikers in seven games.

Earlier a revitalised Walsall produced all the shocks when Merson put himself on the goalscoring list for the first time in nearly 12 months.

The Saddlers were certainly impressive in the first half with Merson their main inspiration. This was demonstrated in the seventh minute when the former England star moved in to open the scoring.

Merson began the move with a pass to Jorge Leitao. The Portuguese produced a cross to the right which was returned into the middle by Gary Birch to nudge the ball home from close range.

Luton subsequently applied considerable pressure on the Walsall defence with Steve Howard and Rowan Vine their main dangermen.

They were, however, foiled by Walsall's on loan goalkeeper, Joe Murphy, who produced several smart saves to keep out the Hatters and prove to be a smart acquisition for the Saddlers.

Walsall produced their best performance for several matches as they matched Luton with some smart play with Merson the master-mind behind most of their attacks.

Luton, however, were often the more dangerous and Walsall's defence was often at full stretch to keep out the eager opposition. Neil Emblen was solid in defence and did much to keep the ever-dangerous, Howard, in check before the break.

The second half was a little untidy in several aspects but Walsall were not concerned as they clinched their best win of the season.

They sealed the game when substitute Fryatt coolly slotted home a 72nd minute goal with Luton's usually compact defence all at sea.
