Rochdale slumped to another defeat to extend their recent run to just one victory in their last seven matches.
Dale boss Alan Buckley said: "There was nothing in it except a couple of mistakes which gave them a goal each time." The first mistake was a tackle by Simon Grand on Adrian Forbes after 19 minutes that led to a penalty being awarded and Steve Robinson beat Neil Edwards from the spot-kick.
Within ten minutes Luton won another penalty but this time Robinson's penalty, after Forbes had been brought down by Gary Jones, was saved brilliantly by Edwards.
Luton dominated the first half but missed a hatful of chances. Rochdale's only shot on target in the first 45 minutes saw Marlon Beresford save from Jones.
But it all changed after the interval with Luton playing second fiddle as Rochdale went all out for an equaliser.
Substitute striker Kevin Townson should have equalised but shot straight at Beresford and shortly afterwards Paul Connor headed straight at the goalkeeper.
Rochdale continued to create chances with Patrick McCourt, Connor and Townson all going close.
Dale were made to pay for those misses as Lee Mansell made it 2-0 after 76 minutes.
Edwards parried Robinson's shot straight to Mansell who slammed the ball into the net.
It was a lost cause for Rochdale although Townson and McCourt went close in the last few minutes.
Luton boss Mike Newell said: "Rochdale gave us a worrying time for 25 minutes in the second half.
"We had the chances to make the game safe in the first half when we were so superior and made so many chances."
