Steve Howard's injury time winner earned Luton Town their first away victory of the season.
Howard struck from four yards out in the third minute of stoppage time, after a slip from Nat Brown in the box had allowed substitute Andrew Fotiadis to square for the in-form striker.
The result saw Luton leapfrog Huddersfield in the table, but was harsh on the home side who at least deserved a point in a dire match peppered with mistakes.
The Terriers almost took an early lead when midfielder Kenny Irons rattled the crossbar with a free kick, before Kevin Gallacher's follow-up header was cleared off the line by centre half Russell Perrett.
Gallacher then missed a diving header after 28 minutes when Perrett diverted Danny Schofield's cross into his path.
Luton striker Dean Crowe then wasted his side's best opening of the half after Brown misjudged a header, leaving goalkeeper Scott Bevan in no mans land. But Crowe lifted his shot over both Bevan and the crossbar.
Two minutes before the break only the late intervention of Chris Holland stopped Paul Hughes opening the scoring, as he was rushed into his shot allowing Bevan to push the ball on to the post.
The second half showed little improvement and Luton's appeals for a penalty were turned down after 53 minutes when Emmerson Boyce tangled with Huddersfield defender Jon Dyson in the box.
Moments later Andy Booth managed to loop a header over goalkeeper Carl Emberson, but his effort lacked power and Perrett reacted in time to clear the danger.
A double substitution gave Huddersfield fresh impetus and after a delightful passing move between Schofield and replacement striker Jon Stead, Schofield was primed to shoot until Kevin Nicholls arrived to steal the ball from his toes with a late lunge.
