On a cold and wet night at Victoria Road it was Luton Town who progressed to the next round despite a battling performance from the home side.
Both teams got off to a tentative start and the home side were proving to be more than a match for Kevin Blackwell's higher division opposition.
The first half appeared to be heading for a stalemate with both sides seemingly content to play long balls to each other until the game finally came to life in the 39th minute.
It was Dagenham who should have taken the lead. A cross by Sam Sloma was headed goalwards by Jon Nurse only for Luton keeper Dean Brill to make a fantastic save diving to his left.
The ball fell to the feet of David Rainford who, after a couple of prods, finally struck the ball towards goal only to see his effort hit the underside of the bar.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 42nd minute when Luton frontman Sam Parkin was bundled over in the area and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Up stepped Matthew Spring who sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and coolly placed the ball in the bottom right corner.
Dagenham came out fighting in the second half but still could not fight their way through and things were to get worse in the 69th minute when a Spring throughball made its way to Drew Talbot who struck a right-footed shot that took a deflection and beat the goalkeeper.
The home side did not give in, however, and on the 73rd minute a Chris Moore run left two defenders in his wake and he slid the ball across for Ben Strevens to tap in.
But despite Dagenham's best efforts, Luton held on for the victory.
