Even the guest appearance of Jake the lucky mascot could not bring Bradford's dismal home run to an end.
The little terrier had already brought victories for Reading, Swindon, Yeovil and Torquay by appearing at their grounds and Bantams boss Colin Todd had promised him the freedom of the city if he helped provide the first win at Valley Parade for more than three months.
As it turned out, it was the terrier-like determination of the Hatters that won the day.
After taking an early lead they rarely looked in any danger as Bradford repeatedly probed their well-drilled defence.
The game was only three minutes old when referee Uriah Rennie controversially awarded the visitors a penalty after Ahmet Brkovic went down under a challenge from keeper Paul Henderson.
The Luton midfielder had pounced on an under-hit back pass by Lewis Emanuel and crashed to the ground as he tried to round the keeper.
The decision sparked off a goalmouth scuffle involving several players and both Emanuel and Brkovic were shown the yellow card.
When the dust settled, Kevin Nicholls stepped up to hit a spot-kick that was superbly tipped round the post by Henderson.
Minutes later Rowan Vine was put through by a great pass from Nicholls that brought another fine save from Henderson.
The City keeper had no chance seconds after that when Vine let fly with a 20-yard effort that went into the net off the base of the post.
After the break, Luton seemed content to sit on their lead and rely on the occasional break away to keep the pressure on the home side.
Bradford battled hard and experienced keeper Marlon Beresford was called upon to make saves from Owen Morrison and Andy Cooke.
The introduction of substitutes Danny Forrest and Ben Muirhead injected more pace into the attacks, but it was midfielder Steven Schumacher who came closest to an equaliser three minutes from the end after firing a low shot against the post.
