Player of the Month August - Vote now

August has seen Luton put in a steady start to the season, with four wins including two in cup matches, and the one defeat. Darren Currie scored the first Luton goal of the season and Alan Goodall scored his first ever goal in the opening day 2-1 victory over Hartlepool. The next Tuesday saw the team travel to Dagenham & Redbridge for the League Two side's first ever League Cup match, and Luton put in a much more comfortable performance, with a penalty from Matthew Spring and a Drew Talbot goal ensuring a safe passage into the Second Round.
However, Luton then hit a stumbling block as the team travelled to Swindon, and by all accounts played pretty badly. David Edwards equalised for Luton
after Swindon opened the scoring, but the team couldn't rescue a draw, letting in a late goal that allowed Swindon to take a 2-1 win. The team picked themselves up and beat a poor Gillingham side 3-1 at Kenilworth Road, with goals from David Bell, Paul Furlong and another Matthew Spring penalty. The pick of the performances was last night, when Luton beat a virtually full-strength Sunderland team 3-0 in the League Cup. A free-kick from David Bell and a double from Paul Furlong ensured that Luton will be in the draw for the Carling Cup Third Round on Saturday.
Every month throughout the season I will be picking five players who have impressed each month, and you can vote for your favourite one. The five for this month are:
1. David Edwards - The young summer signing from Shrewsbury is likely to be the next player to be sold for a lot of money if he keeps going at this rate. He was named the Man of the Match against Hartlepool and opened his account for the season against Swindon. He has impressed greatly in midfield and looks like he will be a key part of the side this season. The prospect of Edwards lining up with Bell in the Luton midfield this season certainly looks intriguing for Luton fans and worrying for any opposition.
2. Darren Currie - Currie had a particularly good start to
his season, scoring a very good goal against Hartlepool, the first Luton goal of the season on his debut. He has looked solid in midfield and has shown that even at his age he can still beat players. In the future, there may be some doubts over whether he will be able to play every single game this season, but the former Ipswich and Brighton man has started well.
3. Paul Furlong - After the Swindon match, it would have been inconceivable that Furlong would be on the list, but his showing in the last two
matches has changed that. The fans were already getting on his back three games into the season, but a goal against Gillingham and a decent performance changed that slightly, albeit against a poor Gillingham. Then two goals in the Carling Cup win against Sunderland, including one that saw the 38-year old outpace the Sunderland defence, showed us that he wasn't so bad after all. His performances may not have been great, but he has scored three times so far this season and is our top scorer. Not bad for a 38-year old.
4. Matthew Spring - Spring looks a different player from last season's Matthew Spring. He is working well with the new midfield around him, and has even managed to score twice, albeit two penalties. One thing that is different from last season is that there are less people around me criticising every little thing he does, and blaming him for everything that goes wrong with the team, so he must be doing something right.
5. Drew Talbot - Although he only has one goal to his name so far this season, Drew Talbot is another Luton player that has impressed the fans with
his commitment and work rate. He definitely looks a threat to defences, as he doesn't seem to stop running and chasing defenders. He certainly looks much better than Peschisolido did when he was playing, and he's not bad on the ball either. A good set of performances this month for Talbot.
Those players who just missed out were Alan Goodall and David Bell. Ex-Rochdale star Goodall has put in solid performances in the left-back position, whereas Bell has only played two games this month, but has impressed greatly in both of them and has scored twice. How long can we hold onto him?
