Last night the PFA League One team of the year was officially announced. Luton fans already knew that there were six players representing us thanks to postings on other official and unofficial websites (the only reason I didn't publicise it was because my internet service decided to crash that day and I couldn't be bothered to the next day). However, despite the team being a good one in general, there were a few problems with it.
The official team is as follows:
GK: Marlon Beresford (Luton) You can't complain about this selection - the only goalkeeper in this division that I feel comes close to Marlon is Carl Muggleton of Chesterfield. The signing of Marlon in the summer was definitely one of the important factors that saw us promoted as champions.
DL: Warren Cummings (Bournemouth) Who chose him? Where is Sol Davis? Ask most right wingers in the division and they would say Sol has been the toughest opponent they have come up against. This guy was pretty anonymous when we played them.
DR: Ryan Taylor (Tranmere) Tranmere fans sing his praises highly as do many pundits, so this one can't really be disputed.
DC: Chris Coyne (Luton) For the third season running, Aussie has proved he is one of the top defenders in the division, and will be up there with the best in the Championship next season. Always his usual consistent self and his performances showed he was happy with the solid Beresford behind him.
DC: Curtis Davies (Luton) Under the tutelage of Chris Coyne, and also John Moore last season, Curtis has developed into a great centre-back, and Chris Kamara and Robbie Earle in particular are big fans of the centre-back. Plays like Rio Ferdinand, except he is more reliable.
ML: Stuart Elliott (Hull) Fair enough - not even Paul Underwood could possibly edge out a left winger who has scored 25+ goals this season, and Hull look particularly vulnerable when Elliott is missing.
MR: Ahmet Brkovic (Luton) Another new signing for the Town, but this player has taken the looks of a lacklustre Croatian right midfielder we had here last year. It's been just like having a new player in the team this season, and he also scored the goal that beat Hull earlier in the season.
MC: Paul Merson (Walsall) I have managed to come up with a plausible reason why Merson was picked - the League One players are hoping the Walsall board will see his selection and think he is too good to be released, and therefore they will keep him on as manager, thus eliminating Walsall's chances of promotion next season.
Where's Sol?
MC: Kevin Nicholls (Luton) Whereas Nicholls is a heroic captain; his discipline has increased greatly, along with his passing. Saturday epitomised what Nicholls was all about - he was exceptional, running around putting superb tackles in, playing superb passes, playing like two men, and Nico was the last to leave the pitch after the celebrations on Saturday. The day Kevin Nicholls leaves Luton Town FC will be a very sad day for the club. Give him the freedom of the city, or better still a knighthood!
FC: Steve Howard (Luton) A word of advice to Steve Howard - sign that contract and then I will dedicate a whole article to how brilliant you are.
FC: Leroy Lita (Bristol City) Great goalscorer, scored a cracking goal against Luton at Ashton Gate in December, and was also amongst the goalscorers for the England Under-21 team this season. He will be the key to Bristol City's promotion attempt next season.
