The 27-year old Luton trainee has signed a deal at Luton until 2009 for a deal initially worth £200,000 which could end up rising to £300,000. Spring played 289 matches for Luton in his first spell at the club, scoring 30 goals in the process, including a brilliant long-range effort against Watford. He will wear the number 7 shirt recently vacated by Carlos Edwards.
The move has raised a few eyebrows because of the connections that Spring has had with Watford in getting them into the Premiership. Spring played 44 games for Watford as they gained promotion to the Premiership and scored 9 goals for Watford in the Championship. Some Luton fans think that just because he has played for Watford in the past then it means that he has no right to come back here. From my point of view, for what it's worth, he used to be a Watford player but he isn't anymore. Not exactly a shocking viewpoint I know, but the fact that he used to be a Watford player is irrelevant because it is in the past now. He was at Luton a lot longer than he was at Watford, so what is the real fuss about him going to Watford? Some argue that he is a money grabber, but if we were only to sign players who weren't interested in money then we would have a very small squad. Another thing is, we are Luton fans, not Watford haters. Those people who are more concerned with hating Watford than they are with supporting Luton can go to Vicarage Road whenever Watford are playing and sit in the away end if that's what they're more bothered about. People who are considering booing him on Saturday when we play Barnsley aren't worth listening to, in my opinion. Yes, there is a rivalry with Watford and yes, both sets of fans enjoy it when we beat each other, but it shouldn't be any more than that. His Watford days are very much in the past now, Spring was a good servant to the club when he was here - people often didn't like him but he played over 200 games for Luton, so he must have done something right in the eyes of the managers (then again, they did include Lennie Lawrence and Ricky Hill). I say we leave Spring alone until he has had a chance to prove himself, then start criticising him if you must. I have faith in Newell.
In fact, the only worry that I have with Spring is if we need him that much. With Langley and Bell hitting form and Robinson still a key player (in my opinion at least), we have signed another central midfielder when we are maybe lacking players in other areas of the team. We also have Foley who can play there in a big emergency, as can Heikkinen and Barnett. I also feel that Boyd may fare well in central midfield and then there is always Leary and O'Leary as a last resort. Spring is obviously better than the defenders are in midfield, but would we have done better in buying players in the positions we actually need them? It may mean that Bell could be moved to the right wing to take the pressure off Brkovic, who isn't getting any younger. Hopefully, he will fit in well enough despite my doubts. He did well for Watford last year but his spell at Leeds wasn't so good
