Yes, it's that time of the year again, after the season has ended, to look back at the season that has just taken place and to look at the performances of individual players and decide which player has been the best performer this season, which people have of course already done through the official website. A lot of Luton fans may have differing opinions about which player has excelled the most this season (although to be honest it's extremely unlikely), so this is a chance for your voices to be heard and a chance for you to cast your vote. There are six nominees, nominated by me, and to vote, all you need to do is scroll down the page and choose your favoured option in the yellow box on the right hand side of the page. By the way, there will be a full list of player reviews later sometime this month, so keep checking for a fans view on some of the idiots that have worn the Luton shirt this season.
1. Keith Keane - Keane showed at the end of last season why Newell persisted in including him in the squad, despite some less than convincing performances, and when called upon this season, he has once again been in fine form. The 21-year old defender/midfielder made his first appearance of the season in the League Cup match against Dagenham and Redbridge, and despite performing well he was given very few opportunities that year. For a player, to be behind someone like Chris Perry in the pecking order must have been hard to take, but Keane bounced back and played a lot of games in 2008, performing superbly in central defence. He won three out of the six available awards in the official awards, as well as the Loyal Luton Player of the Year award, and was made captain in March.
2. Paul Furlong - Considering that he was brought in for backup rather than to be the main goalscorer in the team, Furlong has done a very good job this season, despite being 39. Furlong scored 12 goals in 39 appearances, considerably more than any other striker at the club and has been reliable when called upon, particularly considering his age. He was also the best of Blackwell's signings for the club, which isn't really saying much to be honest.
3. Paul Underwood - This may seem like a strange nomination, but it has to be said that compared to the other wingers at the club who have played this season, with the exception of Emanuel, it has to be said that Underwood has put in as much effort at Kenilworth Road this season and has been just as much use. His pace around the pitch as he walked around to sit in the executive boxes was a pace that the likes of Darren Currie can only dream about achieving. And his hair is naturally blonder than Currie's as well. He has certainly been as useful as Dean Morgan and David Bell for most of the season, despite not actually playing any games.
4. Ahmet Brkovic - Brko made four appearances this season, of which Luton won two of them, showing the quality that the Croatian Sensation has. Cruelly let out on loan to Millwall and eventually being sold to the Lions in January, the Hatters never fully recovered from losing the genius, who resoundingly won the Player of the Month competition for November, despite not playing any games (just goes to show how good he is). Again, he is on here for making as much impact on the wing as Currie, McVeigh, Bell or Morgan managed this season.
5. Kingsley Black - Kingsley hasn't featured for a lot of the season, but returned to Kenilworth Road for the charity match on Saturday. In a Luton shirt again, Kingsley reminded us of his quality by putting in three or four quality crosses, in one of the best performances at Kenilworth Road this season by somebody in a Luton shirt, before being replaced by Tony Thorpe. All in all, an excellent showing by Kingsley Black, who also had some complimentary words for the club afterwards, paying more respect than Darren 'I want to go to Brighton' Currie and Chris 'Got out of Luton before relegation' Perry did anyway, so just for that, I feel he deserves to be ahead of most players in this list anyway.
6. Jake Howells - Jake is one of the few Luton players (particularly defenders) to have had a virtually flawless season in a Luton shirt, coming on for thirty minutes at the end of the Huddersfield game and playing at left-back. He is also half the age of the average age of the Blackwell signings, being just 16 years old, so a vote for Howells is a vote for the future, or maybe just a vote against the old has-beens that Blackwell decided the club needed.
Voting is open for a week.
