Newell leaves

Last updated : 15 March 2007 By Peter Bulkeley
Luton Town manager Mike Newell has left Luton Town this afternoon through termination of his contract. Newell's departure comes after the 2-1 defeat by Hull City on Tuesday night and after another rant at the board in the aftermath of the defeat.

Newell's departure is in all honesty a sad end to a reign of nearly four years in charge that has seen him guide Luton to the league title and a reign that has seen us playing good football rather than the long-ball tactics we saw under Kinnear. This season hasn't been anywhere near as good as the last three seasons, but nevertheless Newell should surely be remembered fondly for his work at the club. Brian Stein will probably take charge for the match against Ipswich on Saturday - if not then we may have to settle for Marvin.

Hopefully the sacking of Newell (or the termination of his contract) isn't simply a rash decision by the board in desperation. If we were to go down, then I would have confidence that Newell would be the man to get us back up again. However, it wasn't to be. I now await the impending phone poll with baited breath. I would like to thank Mike Newell for all of the work he has done at the club, for three great seasons that have made me proud to wear my Luton shirt in public (which isn't an easy thing to do considering where I live) and for the League One title. Good luck for the future Mike.

Now what? Is David Pleat to return to management? Will Terry Fenwick be offered the manager's job? Will Happy Harry and Marvin keep the club in the Championship? If you have any suggestions as to whom you'd like to see take over, then don't hesitate to contact the club, as you've probably got more of an idea than they have.
