Luton Town's management duo Mike Newell and Brian Stein have both signed new two year contracts with the club that will see them remain at the club until June 2007.
Newell has definitely exceeded all expectations since joining the club in June 2004 as Joe Kinnear's successor. At the time, some Luton fans saw him as the puppet of the much maligned John Gurney, who appointed Newell, particularly those who wanted Kinnear back. Since then, Newell's policy of playing better football than we did under Kinnear and his policy of giving up and coming youngsters like Foley and Davies a chance, unlike Kinnear, has seen him become even more popular than Joe Kinnear. Newell has also brought in quality players like Beresford and Underwood, as well as Vine, McSheffrey and Royce on loan. Blackburn and Leicester were supposedly interested in Newell for jobs at their clubs earlier on this season, so it will come as a relief to many Luton fans that he has decided to sign a new contract.
Luton fans will be just as pleased about Stein's new contract as well. Since Harford's departure, Stein has been filling in as assistant coach as well as continuing in charge of the reserve team. The impact that Bruno has had at the club since joining as a coach should not be underestimated. He originally joined under the ill-fated reign of Ricky Hill and has remained as an integral part of the coaching set-up at Luton ever since.
Other news - Nottingham Forest striker Kevin James has been training with Luton Town this week. The 25-year old has seen his first team opportunities restricted this season and was sent to Boston United on loan earlier on this season.
