Luton in new stadium news shock

Last updated : 15 February 2007 By Peter Bulkeley

Luton have agreed a deal with Cliff Bassett and some building company to build a new 22,000 seater stadium off Junction 12. Many fans are astounded by today's developments, and some are unhappy with how the club announced it.

One anonymous fan said, "This is a disgrace. What do the club think they're doing, announcing news like this? Other Luton boards would have left the fans waiting for news and not told us anything. Why do this board have to be different? I won't believe it until I'm sitting in a nice new stadium just outside the town." The last piece of news from the club on the impending new stadium came in 1926, and many Luton fans are shocked that news has been announced so soon after the last announcement. Another person, initials JG, situated in a hideaway in Barbados, had other concerns:

"Is a 22,000 seater stadium really enough? Can't we be a little bit more ambitious? If we made it an 80,000 seater and added a Grand Prix track and a Disneyland theme park then that would be more like it. We should also consider a namechange as well, something like London Luton to give us more of a reputation in other countries. An overweight criminal genius as a chairman wouldn't go amiss either," he said.

Another Luton fan wishing to remain anonymous gave this response when asked about the news, “Look, if you don't stop asking these questions I'm going to phone the police.”

Bill Tomlins, who recently turned 156, has released this piece of news on the official website, relegating an advertisement for some betting company into third place in the news list. Strangely enough, a piece of news that the fans will actually want to read about – the rearranged date for the Norwich match, is below this. Makes a change from Luton fans hearing about it after someone posted a link on the Luton Outlaws messageboard to the Norwich official site announcing the change – at least our lot are actually telling us for once. Another announcement relating to the club obtaining planning permission for the new ground is expected to be given in March 2026, give or take a couple of months. This announcement will also come a few weeks before the news that Luton Airport/Highways Agency/Toddington Service Station have vetoed the move because it clashes with their plans.
