Hotshot striker out on loan/Holmes

Feeney, 26, has made 32 appearances for Luton this season (18 starts), scoring just 4 goals. His career record at Luton is not much better - just 11 goals in 83 appearances. Feeney was signed for £175,000 this time two years ago. However, Feeney failed to impose himself in the Luton team at all, and he was usually on the bench with Howard and Vine starting. This season could have been Feeney's opportunity to shine, but not scoring a goal until after Christmas (except for a League Cup match against struggling Brentford) was an awful start for him. He then started to score a few goals, although none at Kenilworth Road this season. However, he crucially got injured in January when he was just starting to score goals. The former Leeds trainee has also played 16 times for Northern Ireland, scoring twice. The departure of Warren Feeney to Cardiff (probably for good) won't exactly upset a lot of Luton fans. Despite his undoubtedly high work rate, Feeney never hit form for Luton and has always played second or third fiddle behind other strikers. With Talbot, Runstrom, Morgan, Boyd and whatshisname from Liverpool as well as Parkin and Andrew, we haven't exactly got a shortage of strikers that can't score goals (Talbot excepted).

Another Luton player has also departed on loan on the deadline day for loan signings. Midfielder Peter Holmes has signed for League Two promotion candidates Lincoln City after recently returning from a loan spell at Chesterfield. Holmes, 26, is the longest-serving player at Luton, having been at the club since 2000. He has made over 100 appearances at Luton, scoring just over 10 goals, but has been restricted to a handful of appearances this season. He played 10 times for Chesterfield, scoring the one goal. For me, Holmes' departure for the rest of the season could actually be worse for the club than Feeney's departure, even if it is only short-term. With the way the midfielders have been playing in recent weeks, surely Holmes couldn't be any worse, so surely he should have been given a try, as I don't think he has been given a proper go this season. A lot of his appearances this season were at left-back after Sol Davis' stroke and an injury to Lewis, so he hasn't really been given a chance in his natural position. Hopefully, we won't regret this at the end of the season, although I can't see the current midfielders turning their performances round at the moment.
