Southend were in action first at home to Colchester United. Colchester still have a slim chance of making the play-offs, but their away record was still very poor. Also, the fact that the match is a local derby may have added some spice to the event, and inspired Southend. In the end, Colchester won convincingly 3-0, with an early goal from Jamie Cureton killing the Shrimpers off, recording only their fifth away win in the process. Cureton went on to get his hat-trick, which meant that Southend slipped to 23rd in the table on goal difference.
Hull City were also in action today at home to Norwich City. At one point, Norwich were in relegation trouble themselves, but this was hardly a six-pointer from their point of view, as they already had 50 points. Nevertheless, they still won 2-1 against a Hull side who have been improving considerably recently. Darren Huckerby and Dickson Etuhu scored either side of half-time for the Canaries, and Andy Dawson's free-kick at the end was only a consolation in the end. This match may be very insignificant by the end of the season, as Hull are likely to stay up anyway, but it still gives Luton some hope.
However, there are still crucial matches on Saturday and Monday to be played before Luton can start thinking of survival. Burnley have probably the most difficult two matches coming up, with a trip to Birmingham on Saturday and a home match against Cardiff on Monday. Leeds entertain Plymouth at Elland Road tomorrow and travel to Layer Road to take on Colchester. Barnsley have two difficult matches; away at Ipswich on Saturday and a home match against Birmingham on Monday. Hull and Southend also face difficult matches on Easter Monday, with Hull travelling to Wolves and Southend at Preston North End, although defeats for Preston against struggling teams recently and Wolves' comprehensive defeat at home to Southampton will give these two some hope. QPR also face a tough task Saturday when they travel to the Ricoh Arena, although they have a much easier match on Monday, of course. So with at least three points a realistic possibility for many relegation threatened teams at the weekend, Luton have got to perform, otherwise League One will be a much more realistic possibility than it is now next season.
