Deadwood being cleared out

Don Hutchison and Paul Peschisolido are the players that are being released at the end of the season, as their contracts have expired this year. Both Hutchison and Peschisolido are 36 years old and were signed by Kevin Blackwell in an attempt to add experience to the squad, without him realising that it would help if they could do a job at this level. Hutchison in fairness wasn't too bad towards the end of his time at Luton, after Blackwell had left, but by then he was playing as an emergency centre-back and it was probably too late anyway. He was also well known for being an extremely lazy player during the warm-up . Overall, he has played 25 matches for Luton, scoring one goal in the 2-0 victory over Northampton in the Mickey Mouse Trophy, with Peschisolido getting the other goal. It is difficult to know what to say about Hutchison's time at Luton. Clearly, he used to be a very good player, he has played for a number of top clubs such as Liverpool, Everton and West Ham, despite not playing 100 matches for any one club, and has also had a decent international career for Scotland, during which time he scored six goals, including one at Wembley against England. However, he was basically no good for Luton, despite some half decent performances at centre-back, and despite showing some fight towards the end when other players seemingly couldn't care less. Again, I don't doubt that he used to be a good player, so good luck to the Don for his future in football, just a shame things didn't work out for you here.

Paul Peschisolido will also be released from his contract, and his presence in the executive boxes will definitely be missed. Peschisolido only played 5 matches for Luton due to an injury picked up in September, with the one goal in the Mickey Mouse Trophy against Northampton being his only useful contribution during his time at Luton. The situation of Peschisolido's is similar to that of former Luton player Paul Telfer, who was at Bournemouth this season. Telfer had injury problems at Bournemouth that meant he was out for a significant amount of the season, although he did play more games than Peschisolido. The difference between the two is that Telfer had the decency to cancel his contract with the financially struggling Cherries, whereas Peschisolido carried on taking a wage from the financially struggling Luton during his injury. This meant that although Telfer's contribution on the pitch may not have been that great, he did at least earn some respect from Bournemouth fans for his actions. Sadly, Peschisolido didn't decide to take this step, and took money out of the club whilst doing nothing at all to earn it. In fact, only Pesch's bank manager will be sorry to see him leave.

As well as the Hutch and Pesch, other players have been offered free transfers. Full-backs Richard Jackson and Alan Goodall have both been offered free transfers. Neither player has managed to make an impact this season, with Harford recently preferring to play Sol Davis in place of Alan Goodall. Jackson has been in and out of the Luton team, with Chris Perry playing at right-back earlier in the season, and more recently Edward Asafu-Adjaye doing a decent job there, or at least a better job than Jackson anyway. Two other Blackwell signings, Darren Currie and Paul McVeigh, have also been offered free transfers. McVeigh, who is 30 years old and a relatively youthful signing for Blackwell, played 33 matches for Luton, 16 as a sub and most of those appearances came under Mick Harford, where the former Northern Ireland international made very little impact. McVeigh played for Northern Ireland during the time they went ages without scoring a goal, along with Warren Feeney, so it isn't difficult to see how Northern Ireland struggled to score. Darren Currie has appeared 37 times this season, scoring two goals and seemingly caring very little about what he did. Most Luton fans would be prepared to forgive a player with a lack of pace, but pure laziness and appearing not to care about playing doesn't exactly endear you to the fans. His best game for the club was probably the Liverpool FA Cup match, which was televised. Wonder how he managed to motivate himself for that one?

As well as most of Blackwell's signings being cleared out, Marlon Beresford and Steve Robinson have also been offered free transfers. Marlon's only appearances this season came in a loan spell at Oldham Athletic, where he played six times. In his career, he has still made over 100 appearances for Luton, and his best period with the club was in the 2004-05 season. During that season, he made 41 appearances in the title winning side and was named in the PFA League One Team of the Year. His consistency was arguably one of the main reasons Luton won promotion that season, and it was no coincidence that the week Luton lost three games in a row, Marlon was injured. Steve Robinson was also a key player in that season, but in recent seasons has looked very poor, even though his work rate has always been 100%. The 33-year old made 211 appearances for Luton in his time at the club, scoring 12 goals in the process, most memorably against Liverpool in the FA Cup 3rd Round in 2006, a goal that saw Luton take the lead against the European champions at the time. Although both players are of very little use to the club now, it has to be said that both have been excellent servants to the club, particularly in the 04-05 season. Good luck to Marlon and Steve for their future careers.
