In an open meeting at the club this week, Luton Town Club Chairman Bill Tomlins said that top goalscorer Steve Howard and young manager Mike Newell have both been offered new contracts, as both of theirs expire in the summer.
In the meeting, Tomlins revealed that they are speaking to the players whose contracts are up soon, including Howard, and he said that he hopes to secure the target man's contract just like the club did with key players Chris Coyne and Steve Robinson in the summer. Tomlins also stated how much Steve loves the club, and how he had no hesitation in turning down Sheffield Wednesday in the summer.
On the subject of Mike Newell's contract, the chairman said that Newell will go on to have a successful career but hopefully more success with Luton first. Mr Tomlins revealed that Newell's legal representatives arae casting their eye over the contract, but the manager seems perfectly happy with it.
Another player whose contract expires at the end of the season is Gary McSheffrey, currently on loan at Luton, and Bill Tomlins also said that he had spoken to the Coventry chairman about his availability, and revealing he turned down six clubs including Sunderland and Tranmere to return for a second spell at the Hatters.
Also in the meeting, Mr Tomlins spoke of the clubs policy to give players who want a transfer a transfer, the decision not to offer creative midfielder Matthew Spring a contract at the end of last season, and also saying that John Moore might recieve a testimonial at Luton if he wants one. Ex-manager Moore led Luton to their highest ever finish in the Football League before resigning after one year because of the pressures.
