Blackwell, who is 48 years old and born in Luton, has managed Leeds United during the last two seasons, taking them to the play-off final and to the brink of relegation to League One. He has also been an assistant manager to Neil Warnock at Sheffield United and has also been assistant at Bury.
Blackwell has also been a goalkeeper for local team Barton Rovers, helping take them to the FA Vase Cup Final in 1978, and he saved a penalty for Boston against Wealdstone in the 1985 FA Trophy final, three years before Andy Dibble.
